When I go outside, I shoot all kinds of things, including: landscapes, wildlife, nature, events and cityscapes. It’s easy to be attracted to the big things. A skyscraper, mountain range, an elk or flashy costumes in a performance.

But learn to notice, and photograph, the small things. The details in a costume, an old sign in a ghost town or a detail on a machine.

In the below photos, you can see three images of details I took at places that are filled with big things screaming for your attention. Two of these images are from the Old West town of Jerome, Arizona. This place is filled with 150 year old architecture and mining equipment, remnants of what it was like to live here when mining was going on and more.

The other photo is from the Arizona Renaissance Festival. Talk about distractions. You’ll encounter performers, people in costume, arts and crafts, fine art, reenactors, games and much more.

Learning to filter out the big noise so you can hear the whispers of tiny details take some practice, but it’s worth it. You’ll find a whole new world of subjects to photograph.
